How can public transit help the environment?

This is a really important question. Public transit is a really great option for those looking to cut down on their environmental impact but while that is easy for us to say, sometimes it takes a little more convincing than just someone telling you to do something because it’s “better”. GreenAnswers has received questions similar to this a lot in the past and some have even dedicated articles to the subject.

I am going to link bellow some results found in a search for “Public Transit” throughout the GreenAnswers site. From there you will find a plethora of information regarding this topic.

When people chose to take public transit instead of driving, this reduces the amount of vehicles on the road, which reduces the amount of exhaust released into the air. Car exhaust contains greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, so reducing the number of cars on the road reduces the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, which can help slow climate change. Exhaust also contains other poisonous gases, such as carbon monoxide, which can be deadly to humans and other animals. Less of these gases released into the air is also better for the environment.
