Politics is important to sustainability because the laws resulting from political efforts can help enforce stricter restrictions on polluters, ensure conservation efforts, and promote environmental education. Although individual’s lifestyles greatly effect the environment, so do their politics! Unfortunately, the trend of politics in the United States seems to dictate that lobbyists speak louder than the needs of our environment. A great textbook written for undergraduate students called Politics and the Environment: From Theory to Practice is a great resource if you are interested in learning more about the relationship of politics and the environment.
