How can plant biodiversity protect against disease?

Since so many of our drugs, from aspirin to Novacaine, come from plants, the loss of any plant species could mean that we will never be able to take advantage of some extraordinary medicinal power it had. Consider rainforest plants: they are the source for about 25% of the medicine we use, and yet we have examined less than 5% of rainforest plants for medicinal value. Just as the plants we discover in the future may protect us from diseases we currently think of as incurable, we need to protect the diversity of plants so that we will have the cures.
