how can non magnets be magnetized?

    Anything can be magnetized as long as it is made of a material that is attracted to a magnet (iron, nickel, cobalt, etc).  When done correctly, the object can “pick up” the magnetic field of the magnet, resulting in an object that is temporarily magnetized.
