How can mummified forests help us learn about the environment?

Trees are a very good source of information about climate change.  From the rings in their trunks we can tell how old the trees were but also how quickly they grew.  If the trees are related species to trees we have now, we can compare them and see what their world was like.  A recent discovery of a mummified forest in Canada can also help scientists see how the forest was responding as the climate changed from “greenhouse” to “icehouse” (a period of glaciation) conditions.
