How can it be so cold outside even though the sun is shining?

During the winter, the sun is further from the Earth, reducing its ability to provide heat. The ground, waters, and air aren’t able to stay warm throughout the season. Strong winds can affect temperature by adding a wind chill. Weather patterns, like currents and cold fronts can further the coldness you experience.
