Here are some ideas that will help you “green” your apartment:
You can properly ventilate the space. Go around and open all the windows. If you have a fan, position it in a window so that it draws the contaminated air outside.
Reduce waste by recycling and using organics in a compost pile to fertilize your plants.
When decorating, find reusable furniture like on Craigslist, Pennysaver, or at your local thrift store. (Remember that any item can be altered according to your liking, so look for the potential in everything!)
Look for the word “organic” when shopping.
Put up window treatments such as natural-fiber curtains as opposed to blinds, since you can take them with you when you move again, and they can be thrown in the laundry every month or so to keep them clean.
Sleep in a chemical-free environment, starting with your bed. Use organic mattresses and/or organic bedding.
To reduce energy use, install power strips that can be turned off when you’re not using the attached electronics, eliminating phantom loads and save you money. Use Energy Star appliances. Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs. Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees and install low-flow showerheads.
