You can reduce the environmental impact of owning a dog in lots of ways. If you pick up his poop, either reuse a bag or use biodegradable ones. Also, you should make sure that you do pick up your dog’s poop in areas with protected or fragile ecosystems, like national parks because dog poop has been found to be a source of water contamination and can cause harmful over-fertilization of soils.
You can also buy post-consumer doggy toys at http://www.ecoanimal.com/dog_toys.html and be mindful of the kind of food you feed him. There are all-natural and organic dog foods available. I’m sure if you ask at your local pet store, someone would be happy to help you find some.
