You can protect your leather shoes from water damage by using saddle soap and a water-proofing spray. If they do get wet, you can stuff paper inside them to help them dry and maintain their shape. This will make a great difference if you do not wear them again until they are dry. It is also wise to use a small brush such as a tooth brush to wipe away any dirt and dust which may have collected especially in the crevices and around laces.
