I will second the idea of shredding the compost material, and add that frequent turnings will also help speed up your composting endeavors. Some people even buy or make compost tumblers to do the work for them.
I put my compost in a large black garbage can with holes on the bottom, all around the sides and top ( small holes done with a drill) this makes for easier turning, just lay it down and roll it. Only fill the can 3/4 to the top, and after rolling, spray lightly with water until damp. This has made it not only faster but easier too!
