How can I make cut flowers last longer?

Here are a few tips to make cut flowers last longer. First, make sure they are trimmed correctly at the stems. If not, cut about one-half inch off the end of the stem at about a forty-five degree angle. Split all stems about one-half inch from the bottom with a knife or crush the bottom of the stem with a mallet (if the stems are woody). For best results, cut the stems underwater. Also, try adding one teaspoon of sugar to the water in the vase. Always keep the flowers trimmed and remove dead or dying flowers immediately. Change the water and mist the flowers with water everyday.
