How can I keep stored water for a long period of time for emergency?

Ideally, you should store emergency water in clean, plastic containers such as soda bottles or buckets, and replace the water every six months.

However, you can also add a small amount of bleach (one teaspoon per 10 gallons), which should prevent any bacteria growth, once the container is sealed. You can also use this method to purify dirty water for drinking.
