Vitamin D3 is produced by our skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Some foods contain this vitamin as well, such as eggs and salmon. Some products like milk contain a synthetic version of the vitamin that was added in. Vitamin D3 also comes in pill form.
Exposure to sunlight allows your body to produce vitamin D (both D3 and D2). The energy from the UVB rays is captured by your skin and then your body synthesizes the vitamin.
You can also get vitamin D from eggs, fish, fortified milk, and cod liver oil.
