How can I get better gas mileage in my Toyota Tacoma?

To improve gas mileage for any car, there are several things you can do. provides lots of tips:

    • Rapid acceleration wastes gas, so observe the speed limit and try not to “rev” your car or push it too hard to go faster.  According to the web site, each 5 mph you go over 60 mph, you are paying an extra 29 cents per gallon.
    • Avoid excessive idling if you can, and turn off your engine when you park.  Not only is it better for the environment, you waste a fourth to a half gallon of fuel per hour.  Even though you may not idle for a full hour, little bits of time add up quickly.
    • Keep your tires inflated to the recommended psi because proper tire pressure improves gas mileage.
    • Plan your trips all at once on the most efficient route.

You can check out the other tips they have here.  If you are doing these things already, you are likely getting the top gas mileage possible for your car.

Expanding on the answer above you might want to consider other things (not sure if they have already been mentioned) like the fact that a car starting up cold consumes more gas than a car which has already been warmed up, so that definately tells you combining a set of errands into one trip helps as Krich11 pointed out.

Another thing you might want to consider is your timing. Traffic conditions play a big role in gas consumption and planning ahead might save you money as well!

If all else fails you can push it! lol
