Most shingles are disposed of by normal means in a landfill, but shingles can be recycled. Shingle scrap shredded to 1.5 inches and smaller can be used as a gravel substitute. Recycling centers need special permits to recycle roof shingles – one such company in Michigan is profiled at the link below. Your local waste management authority would be able to tell you if there is a nearby company that can recycle the shingles.
