Grocery stores should stop using plastic bags, which are giant pollutants, both in their production and in their disposal. Some grocery stores offer plastic bag recycling, but a more productive solution is to not use plastic bags at all.
Another great option, which would be hard for large grocery chains, but works for local grocery stores and co-ops, is to only provide local products. Most grocery stores have huge carbon foot prints because of their shipping, be it accross the country or overseas. Moving food products gives off a lot of emissions and harms the environment, while encouraging other unsustainable industries, like the meat industry.
