How can GPS systems help planes save fuel?

A GPS system ensures that planes, especially on routes that are unfamiliar to the pilot, fly the shortest miles possible between two points. The pilot will know if they stray from that direct shortest path, and when they do that’s when they start using unnecessary miles that waste gas.
