How can Germany be such a leader in solar power, when they are so far north and don’t get as much sunlight as many other countries?

Thanks to a 2000 law, other, less energy-efficient utilities must effectively subsidize the solar power industry by buying their own electricity at higher prices. By contrast, the government is phasing out nuclear power, and public opinion is largely against windmills. Now, Germany produces around half of the world’s solar power! These companies have been successful enough to provide jobs and therefore become popular. Germany knows it cannot always out-compete lower latitude countries in solar power, but they are getting a head start now so that they will eventually be the leaders of solar technology, not just production. And even on rainy and dark days, the solar panels can still produce 1/4-1/2 of normal power.
