They could add in stipulations on the lease to include requirements for alternative or renewable sources of energy as a certain percentage of the building’s total consumption. They could also team up with tenants to plan out how to implement the projects and provide incentives through compensation.
New requirements have been made in order to renew leases and help with transitioning to 2015 compliances. These include energy efficient standards for buildings, as well as greener construction methods. The General Services Administration seems to be pushing for landlords to provide energy efficient buildings, motivating them through lease renewals, even if it simply means updates on only certain fixtures.
