How can energy be harvested from landfills?

Energy can be harvested from landfills by collecting the methane gas which comes from decomposing trash. This collection is first done through a series of wells which draw up the gas from the soil.

Then this gas is transferred to a blower/flare system which directs the gas to a central location. At this location, it may be used for a variety of purposes, such as flaring it, generating electricity, replacing fossil fuels, or processing the gas into a higher-quality form.
