How can electric cars be zero emissions if they are still getting their power from coal plants?

They can’t. This is a big problems with hybrid and all-electric cars – they aren’t truly clean unless they are getting energy from renewable sources. However, as the energy supply of the world changes from fossil fuels to solar, wind, hydroelectric, and other renewable sources, electric cars will be critical to utilize these sources for our transportation needs. Conventional cars can only run by combusting fossil fuels, which is exceptionally dirty.
