While tourism is generally considered to have a negative impact on the environment, since it involves long-distance travel, destruction of ecosystems to build up tourist attractions and resorts, increased human impact, it can also be viewed in a more positive light. Ecotourism, or tourist activities dedicated to exploring protected areas of nature in minimally impactful ways, is especially geared toward raising awareness about the value of maintaining such pristine natural settings. Ecotourism is also effective in raising funds to support conservation efforts, since money the tourists pay is frequently put toward conservation. Even in conventional tourism, destinations are generally motivated to keep their local ecosystems beautiful and diverse, in order to attract tourists; and for this reason, the money generated from tourism can be put into maintaining local habitats.
