Cleaning supplies can be considered green if they are made from sustainable sources (non-petroleum), if they are non-toxic, and if they are biodegradable. There are many such green cleaning products available on the market today.
Clorox provides a great line of natural cleaning products which use renewable and natural resources and are also packaged in recycled material packaging. They are the largest green cleaning supply company and hold abut 70% of the green cleaning market.
Additionally, there are many household items that can be used for cleaning, such as vinegar and baking soda.
To make cleaning products greener some companies are changing the ingredients found in those cleaners. Some companies are developing a green line of products that can be made using biodegradable materials and plant based sources. Some specific ingredients include; citric acid, xanthan gum, corn based ethanol, and coconut oil.
Simple Green has been around for a while; and in addition to being non-toxic and biodegradable, Simple Green comes highly concentrated, so it saves on packaging. Every day cleaning around the house calls for Simple Green to be diluted 1:33 parts with water. So if you just use it for cleaning counters, etc, one bottle saves 32 bottles from the landfill.
