One way that cities can promote smart growth is to adopt the EPA’s 10 principles to smart growth. The city is, afterall, one of the greatest shapers of the urban landscape and they can also greatly influence investors and developers. Some of the 10 principles are to have mixed land uses, provide a variety of public transportation, use compact building designs, create walkable neighborhoods, encourage community stakeholders and make development decisions that are not only fair but cost efficient as well. If these guidelines are kept in mind, smart growth is much more achievable.
