One way many cities are tackling this issue is by establishing green building policies. Cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, and Boston have put regulations into effect that all new construction must meet LEED standards. THis will greatly help cities save energy because most energy consumption actually comes from the buildings of a city.
One thing that cities are doing to reduce their energy consumption is to upgrade their lighting to LED lighting. One city that is on its way to using 100 percent LED lighting in their downtown area is Ann Arbor, Michigan. They use LED lights for their Christmas lighting and are starting to upgrade more lights. When Ann Arbor reaches its goal of 100 percent LED lighting downtown they expect that public parking lighting energy consumption will be cut in half and they will prevent the emission of 2,425 tons of CO2 each year.
