How can carbon dioxide help with oil recovery?

Using carbon dioxide is known as a tertiary (third) attempt to get oil out of the ground, once the easy ways have gotten only some of the oil out. The method is called gas injection, and it is when people inject gases like carbon dioxide or nitrogen into the reservoir. The gas will then either expand, which pushes the oil to the pumps to be pumped to the surface, or the gas will dissolve into the oil and make it flow easier up the pumps.
