How can “built-in electrical wiring” monitor home energy use?

“Built-in electrical wiring” is essentially utilizing the wiring that already exists in your home as an antenna, directing a signal to “Sensor Nodes Utilizing Powerline Infrastructure” (shortened to SNUPI). This antenna forwards information to a home automation system, which electronically controls all of the systems you would normally handle on a case by case-basis. For example: You would turn the temperature on your hot water tank down manually to reduce the amount of heat it’s using, thus lowering energy. A home automation system could do this and more, provided it were directed by a built-in wiring system.
