Hydrogen is an energy carrier, much like electricity, though Hydrogen is not naturally found as a gas on earth. Because of this we release the energy either through steam reforming or electrolysis. Steam reforming is used the most often, where they heat the water to release the hydrogen. Its the least expensive form and the most used in the United states, but this way of releasing Hydrogen from water has been linked with emitting green house gases and thus contributing to global warming.
Electrolysis, the act of splitting hydrogen from water, is more expensive but environmentally friendly.
