Virtually every bacteria that can be used to produce biofuels are genetically engineered or at least altered. Companies that research these bacteria use tools from synthetic biology to modify the pathways that bacteria to make fatty acids, which stores energy. These acids are a chain of molecules that group in a certain way, when burning these break down and produce energy.
