Toxic Air pollution can be created by a number of things, including metal smelting, and coal burning – which releases mercury into the atmosphere. High temperature burning of metals can turn them into very fine particles that are released into the atmoshere with other gases created in the burning process. Although these particles are very small, they are dangerous in large quantities, which are created as more chemical plants function.
The EPA monitors these metals, and about 200 other pollutants with over 300 monitoring stations around the US.
