I couldn’t find a reference that estimated for the entire world, but there are scientists who look at archeological layer samples for pollen to estimate the extent of forests thousands and millions of years ago. This one article estimates that Brazil’s Amazon forest used to extend for 1,200,000 sq km. It’s current size is about 95,000 sq km, which is only 8% of the estimated original size. Similar research has been done for other areas (like the second article linked below).
