The earthquake in Haiti registered at 7.0 on the Richter scale which is extremely destructive. However the serious damage done to the country was compounded by the weak infrastructure of Haiti, which is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. 80% of the population lives below the poverty line and around 50% of the population lives in ‘abject poverty.’ This means that houses for nearly half the population of the country are no more than shacks that are not built to withstand an earthquake or even a hurricane. It raises the idea of what characterizes a “natural disaster,” and makes one aware that such a disaster created from a 7.0 earthquake would probably not occur to the same extent in richer nations.
The earthquake that rocked Haiti registered 7.0 on the Richter Scale.
