The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta’s total area is around 1,100 square miles. Originally marshland, the delta now includes around 70 islands and tracts surrounded by levees and waterways. It is a source of freshwater for other parts of California such as the San Joaquin Valley. The state is currently proposing a controversial $10 billion project to build a canal or tunnel to divert water to Southern California.
