As of 2001, the park is 131,983 acres.  The state of California owns 60,268 acres of this amount and the Federal government owns the other 71,715 acres.  The state owned part includes the Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek Redwoods parks.

In 1978 the park underwent an authorized expansion to 106,000 acres (from 56,201) but only 9,000 of the 40,000 added acres were old-growth redwoods.

In 2005, the park received approval to expand to include the Mill Creek watershed which added 25,000 additional acres to the Park and total acreage.
