It’s a huge problem and it’s costing us millions already. Pollutants and debris enter the water system and it is very expensive to clean it up. We should be more careful to protect our waterways from getting non-water items (like plastic bags, chemicals [and runoff from motor vehicles], and other forms of trash) in the water channels. This stuff eventually ends up in the ocean where it causes health problems for sea creatures, and in turn, humans as well.
