Deforestation is a major problem in the Phillipines. Certain islands were cleared early on during Spanish colonization, Since 1900 the percent-land-cover of forest in the Phillipines was nearly 70%. It has decreased to less than 19 percent cover. The Phillipines host a huge breadth of unique plant and animal populations that are extinct or becoming that way quickly, directly as a result of deforestation efforts, many being illegal logging initiatives.
Deforestation in the Phillipines also severely effects soil stability and quality, errosion and water quality and marine life as well as air quality.
