How big a problem are rabid raccoons in New York’s Central Park?

It seems they are on the rise! Only 1 rabid raccoon were found between 2003 and 2008 but in 2009 there were 12 found.  More than 8 were found in the first 3 weeks of the year.

Notice is being given to all New Yorkers and tourists to look out and keep pets on leashes but there hasn’t been a rabies infection in a human since 1953 and the park is doing its best to keep it that way.  The rapid rise in numbers is a concern but there haven’t been any bites.
