How big of fish can the fishermen using the long poles with hooks on them catch? You know the ones where they just fling them over the side of the boat.

Depending on the stamina and fighting spirit of the fisherman, pretty big fish. The largest fish ever caught with a standard rod-and-reel setup was a 2664 pound white shark caught off the coast of South Australia in 1959 by angler Alfred Dean.

Typically, sharks (whites in particular) are the largest marine creatures typically snared by a rod-and-reel.
