Any asteroid larger than 35 meters in diameter (about the size of a basketball court) is large enough to strike the surface of the earth without being vaporized in the atmosphere. A 50 meter wide asteroid would create an explosion equivalent to that of a nuculear bomb. A 300 meter wide asteroid would create an explosion large enough to destroy New York City.
