According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, China is the largest emitter of carbon dioxide, but the US is much higher per capita. So to pollute less than China, per person, we would have to reduce our CO2 emissions by 15.2 tons per person. Interestingly, while Australia ranks 16th, it has the highest per capita emissions of CO2.
China is currently the biggest producer of CO2 in the world, overtaking the US in 2007. However the US is not far behind. Ways that America could decrease it’s levels of CO2 emissions include lessening its use of fossil fuel, its reliance on oil, and increasingly utilizing clean energy.
It’s also important to remember that we are guilty of “outsourcing emissions”. Lots of factories and manufacturing plants are being put up in China because we don’t want them here! However, we have not problem exporting the goods and using them since it’s cheaper to do it that way.
