How big can tarpon get?

Good question, sherylWeiser.  There are two types of tarpon, the Atlantic tarpon and the Pacific tarpon.  The biggest Atlantic tarpon recorded was just over 8 feet and weighed about 350 pounds, and the biggest Pacific tarpon was just under 5 feet and weighed about 35 pounds.

    Hope this helps!

Female tarpon are generally larger than male tarpon. According to the Ichthyology Department of the Florida Museum of Natural History, females can grow to lengths greater than 8.2 feet (and weigh almost 355 pounds), while males are usually smaller. Generally speaking, tarpon are slow growers. They do not reach their maximum size until they are around 6 or 7 years old.

Tarpon is classified under the genus megalops which is Greek for “large eyed”. Yes, Tarpons are known to have large eyes. Tarpon inhabit both the sides of the Atlantic Ocean. They populate a wide variety of habitats but are mostly found in coastal waters, bays, estuaries, and lagoons within tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate climates.

These fish are have silvery sides and large scales. The Taron is also known as “silver king”  and they are given that name because their sides and belly are a bright silver color. Tarpons are also large fishes. Females can grow up to 8.2 feet and weight about 355 lbs. Females typically live more than fifty years while males live about thirty years.
