How big can herds of elk get?

    Herds of elk in the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming are some of the numerous in the world- the population was originally roughly 25,000 elk. Montana and Colorado also have large elk populations.

    The size of a herd of elk will vary depending on terrain, amount of cover, and availability of resources. Larger herds of elk can have as many as 400 individuals. Larger herds usually occur in open spaces while smaller herds are found in wooded areas.
