The solar sail launched by Japan earlier this summer is square in shape and measures 20 meters on the diagonal. It is 0.0075 mm thick and powered by the sun’s photons. The country’s space program has plans to send up another one with a diameter of 50 meters. The United States has also been testing square solar sails that are 20 meters long.
