How big are pangolin scales?

The standard scale on a pangolin usually ranges from .7 – 5cm (.3-2 inches) in size. The scale size is relatively proportional to the size of the pangolin, so that’s why there is such a large range for scale size. Sadly, pangolin scales are very popular in Chinese traditional medicine, and so many pangolins are hunted and killed for them. Pangolin’s scales are attached to their skin, not their skeletons, and this allows them to bristle up when threatened because they’re attached to the animal on only one end.
