Giant Manta Rays can have a wingspan of up to 9 meters (29 feet) wide, but the average is 6-7 meters (20-23 feet). The biggest rays weigh around 2900 lbs.
The Manta Ray, the largest of the Ray species, can grow up to 25 feet across and weigh up to 5,000 pounds.
Last year Scientists discovered through genetic analysis that there are 3 different species of Giant Manta Rays. The newest species discovered is larger and thus heavier than the previously discovered species. This Giant Manta Ray weighs in at 4500 pounds and a “wingspan” of 26 feet. Despite their size these rays are very elusive which one might account for Scientists’ ignorance to them.
