How is Baghdad restoring its zoo?

The 2003 invasion of Iraq killed all but 35 of the animals in the Baghdad zoo. Since then, there has been a large-scale effort to renovate the zoo. Many animals were collected from private zoos. The mansions of some Baath Party officials, for example, contained lions, tigers, brown bears, wolves, jackals, ostriches, badgers, foxes, and monkeys. Other animals were donated from various parts of Europe. Today the zoo has over 1,000 animals and is expected to expand further.
