How bad are air conditioners? Do they release carbon dioxide? Are they better or worse than using electricity to run ceiling or floor fans?

Central AC systems use about 3500 watts per one hour of use
Window AC units use about 900 watts per one hour of use
ceileing fans use about 75 watts per one hour of use

they do not emit carbon dioxide but may release CFC’s if there is a leak

AC units have some harmful affects on health:
Toxins that escape into the air are continually re-circulated through the air conditioning unit. Most air filters only remove about 10% of these pollutants. Dust, pollen, mold spores, animal dander an bacteria found in homes is constantly circulated through the air conditioning system. To make matters worse, all these pollutants gather in the air conditioning duct work , a dark moist environment where they can continue to grow and be recirculated throughout the home.
