Transporting and storing alternative energy is a big issue in green tech at the moment. The primary issue with alternative energy sources is that they’re often built far from urban areas (due to geographical concerns). As a result, a large portion of the energy generated is lost in transmission as heat. We’re currently trying to make our powerlines more efficient by raising voltage and at the same time, developing the smart grid so that we can use more alternative power during peak hours, thus reducing the number of traditional generators required as backup. So one solution is not to store the energy at all, but to make its generation coincide with periods of high demand during the day. Otherwise, electricity generated through green energy is stored the same way as electricity generated traditionally.
