The oceans are extremely vast, and we depend on them for so much, that it will take a massive effort to make all the ecosystems in the ocean truly healthy. The first step is international legislation that would sharply curtail fishing, to allow fish populations to rebound. Other important legislation would include sharply limiting dumping chemicals and other waste into the ocean, and more regulation of boating and swimming. We should take special care with important areas like coral reefs, which are very susceptible for damage. Limiting greenhouse gas emissions is also important, because the warming of the oceans (and the rising sea levels) have negative effects on some marine organism. That’s just a start. It will be quite a task.
