How are U.S. wolf populations doing these days?

Gray Wolves, found here in the United States, are doing quite well.  According to the Humane Society of the United States there are roughly 5,000 wolves within the continental US.  Wolves are doing so well that certain “distinct population segments” (wolves from distinct regions of the US) of wolves, such as those in the Great Lakes region have already been removed from the endangered species list.  Wolves of the Rocky Mountain region are expected to be removed next.
